Sarah Carr selected for Hereford

Sarah Carr in HerefordExcellent news today that Sarah Carr has been picked at the Liberal Demcrat candidate for the cumbersomely named Hereford and South Herefordshire constituency. If elected, she will become only the second Liberal Democrat female MP to take over from an incumbent male MP (I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but only Rochdale with Cyril Smith and Liz Lynne springs to mind as the other one).

Hereford was the first constituency in which I did any Liberal Democrat campaigning, and so I’ve always felt particularly warm towards the seat. It was the key target seat in the West Midlands when I was at university in Stoke-on-Trent, and so I spent many weekends down there in the run-up to the election. As a result of that campaign, I also first met other people who continue to be good friends in the party, like Colin Ross who gave me the news on Sarah’s selection.

Sarah Carr was Paul Keetch’s agent at that election, and so played a key role in finally converting the perennial ‘nearly seat’ in to a Lib Dem held constituency. She always seemed to be sat at her desk in the corner of her first floor office at the party’s headquarters in Widemarsh Street, busily planning the campaign and organising literature. Sarah knows the seat incredibly well, and I know she will be a brilliant MP. But with a majority of just 962 she needs lots of help.
