Aberystwyth’s Tabernacle Chapel burns down

15 July 2008 · Leave a Comment

When I lived in Aberystwyth I used to pass this building quite a lot, with it being part way between my flat, Rummers Wine Bar and the harbour.  Both of which were places I liked to visit.  However I’ve just seen the news that it burnt down at the end of last week.

Tabernacle Chapel never stood out for me as a particularly attractive building, although I think the side on Powell Street was more so, instead it was imposing simply because of its size.  Indeed, one website I’ve read said that it was the biggest chapel in Aberystwyth.  It always seemed a shame that it was stood derelict, but with church attendance in decline I suppose it was inevitable that it wouldn’t have stayed open as a chapel.  Instead of being converted in to flats it now looks as though it will have to be demolished, making it another sad change to the face of Aberystwyth in the few years I’ve been away.
